Allergies

Amelia,
We have been on quite the journey with you for the last 4 months and it is one that is going to last a lifetime for you.
After I finished nursing you around your first birthday, you would refuse to drink cows milk unless it was bedtime and it was warm.  You still seemed to have residual reflux that you suffered from as a baby.  Many evenings, you would throw up right before bed.  I thought it was from laying flat in your bed.  You also threw up a lot when you were crying or upset but it never seemed directly associated with any food.  You also have yet to have consistently normal stools.  You have probably had about 10 "normal" stools in your entire life.
As the months went on this year, your throwing up started to be affiliated with drinking milk so I set up an appointment to meet with your pediatrician in the beginning of July.  On July 4, we were at Backman's house and you at homemade ice cream - you instantly projectile vomited everywhere!  On July 7, dad made my birthday dinner - it included shrimp (which you had had before) and you had an anaphylactic reaction to the shrimp.  Your face swelled and I took you to the ER where you received epinephrine (truly a miracle drug).  The next day I called the pediatrician office and they said to go directly to an allergist.
We met with Dr Firszt for the first time at the beginning of August.  Your skin tests all came back negative and he decided to run blood tests as well.  Your blood tests came back with some unexpected and crazy results.  You have a confirmed dairy and shellfish allergy.  You have also been diagnosed with a mast cell activation disorder.  A couple weeks ago you also had an endoscopy and partial colonoscopy where we discovered you have EoE.  All of these are things you will become very familiar with as you grow up.  For now, it is my job to be your advocate and make sure that we take care of your insides and do what is best to manage these lifelong allergy issues.  We still have a ways to go but I hope that soon we can get a maintenance plan in place that works for your body!
I love you and will do whatever it takes for you to lead a healthy life!
Love,
Mom
